School Crisis Prevention, Preparedness, and Intervention Training Curriculum

As we move into expanding our roles, development and enhancement of crisis intervention teams is an excellent example of how school psychologists can expand their roles in the regular education setting.

The PREPaRE crisis curriculum has been developed by NASP as part of a decade-long leadership in providing evidence-based resources and consultation related to school crisis prevention and response.  PREPaRE training is ideal for schools committed to improving and strengthening their school crisis management plans and emergency response.  It provides training for school personnel in crisis preparation, prevention, response, and recovery procedures.
    PREPaRE is:

  • The first evidenced based-training to meet the unique needs of school crisis teams.
  • Developed by expert school psychologists with formal crisis training and extensive experienced in school crisis prevention and response.
  • Foundation for new crisis responders and provides more in-dept training for those with some knowledge and experience.
  • Appropriate for crisis team leaders/members, school mental health staff who might help respond in a major crisis, community providers who will be part of a school crisis response

The PREPaRE Crisis Curriculum includes two workshops that can be conducted together or separately.

Workshop 1          Crisis Prevention and Preparedness-

  • This one-day workshop provides a broad overview of the school crisis team’s roles and responsibilities, with a special emphasis on crisis prevention and preparedness.

Workshop 2          Crisis Intervention and Recovery-

The Roles of School-Based Mental Health Professionals

  • This two-day workshop provides a specific examination of the school-based mental health professionals’ role and responsibilities, with a special emphasis on crisis intervention and recovery.

All individuals who receive PREPaRE training will gain a better understanding of the organization and function of a comprehensive crisis team (workshop 1) and/or the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the mental health needs of students and staff in the aftermath of a crisis (workshop 2).  This includes knowledge of crisis reactions, prevention of psychological trauma, and interventions and evaluations of the effectiveness of those interventions.  School mental health professionals will also better understand their role within the comprehensive team.

Additionally, individuals who have leadership roles (crisis team leader, supervisors, etc.) and/or firsthand experience with school-based crisis response will be able to use elements of the PREPaRE Crisis Curriculum and materials to provide informal in-service training for their staff.

Further, following certification as a PREPaRE trainer, crisis intervention leaders may offer a “PREPaRE workshop (Trainer of Trainers).  The Trainer of Trainers will allow participants to train additional PREPaRE Trainers.
