WORKSHOP: Designing behavior support plans for students with challenging behavior

WHEN: Saturday November 19, 2011, 9:00am - 12:00 noon

WHERE: University of Rhode Island Multicultural Center, Kingston, RI

PRESENTER: Dr. Gary Stoner (Director of URI School Psychology Program)

FEE: RISPA Members $40; Non-members $50; Students: $15

This workshop will focus on providing participants with systematic strategies for linking assessment to the prevention of and intervention with challenging behavior in schools and classrooms. Participants will learn about contextually grounded approaches to the understanding, assessment, prevention, and management of problem behavior in schools. Emphasis will be placed on effective classroom management and discipline practices, teaching pro-social behavior, arranging school and classroom environments to promote positive social behavior, and how to deal effectively with problem behavior in classroom environments. In addition, participants will learn to use several related models and methods for understanding and managing problem behavior in school settings. These methods will include understanding and using functional behavior assessment strategies, and linking these assessments to behavior support plans. In the context of Response to Intervention, this workshop will focus mainly on Tier 2 and Tier 3 level supports/behavior.
Objectives:
1. Participants will learn about the rationale for and conceptual underpinnings of positive behavior support, including the importance of focusing on the environmental determinants of problem behaviors.
2. Participants will learn to use data from behavioral assessment and functional assessment activities to generate hypothesis statements about problem behaviors and to design behavior support plans.
3. Participants will learn to develop behavior support elements based on the model of behavior support developed by Linda Bambara and Lee Kern (Guilford Press, 2005, Individualized supports for students with problem behaviors), including the following:
a. antecedent and setting event manipulations
b. teaching alternative skills
c. responding effectively to problem behavior
d. long term supports and ongoing evaluation
e. extending behavior support to home/community
environments
4. Participants will learn how the activities and components of objectives numbered 1 through 3 above relate to school-wide positive behavior support methods and activities.

3 RIDE CEUs abd 3 NASP CPD units will be awarded.
